ESG
You’ve heard about it before, but you
don’t quite know what it really is or why it’s even important. But worry not,
because you’ve come to the right place. We’re here to help clear things up so
you can be star of the show at the next party.
WHAT IS ESG?
ESG stands for environmental, social,
and governance. These standards act as a guideline for how a company operates
and makes decisions with regards to those three aspects.
The environmental aspect refers to the
way the company operates with regards to the protection and conservation of
nature.
The social aspect is how a company
manages its relationships with all its stakeholders, with a focus on the
communities where it operates in.
The governance aspect refers to how a
company manages itself in terms of leadership, organizational structure,
audits, internal and external controls, and transparency.
WHY IS ESG IMPORTANT?
As investor sentiments and priorities
begin to shift toward companies that better align with their values, companies
are finding that having a strong ESG presence is to their benefit in addition to
the inherent benefits of ESG itself.
Many financial advisors have also
tailored their recommendations in favor of companies that follow ESG criteria
as they became more appealing to investors.
IS ESG A NEW THING?
ESG has always been around, but only
more recently has it been given a more formal name. Companies have always been
aware of their corporate responsibilities, but never has there been a better
time to reevaluate their practices. In addition to the practical ethical values
of following ESG criteria, investors are also becoming increasing influenced
when it comes to their investment decisions.
